MAKING COMPOST

Today we went to the Joyful Soil Nourishing Families group.  We made compost at one of the group
member's back gardens.

We put toilet rolls and egg cartons on one of the layers to give air circulation and at the bottom we put branches stripped of their leaves to keep the air going through.

We made layers of brown material and green material, such as fallen leaves, twigs and rotting grass for the brown layer, and grass, weeds, fresh leaves and nettle for the green layer.
Approximately 15 cm thick of brown to 5 cm thick green.

We dampened each layer so that it was like a wet wrung-out sponge!  The rotting grass smelt a little foul, because when it was rotting before we had got there, it had not had air going through it.
